Chapter 17: Following the River

For the next two days, Solange, Leviathan, Mesagan, and the rest of their group followed the River Gossamer north. Eventually, meadows and grasslands gave way to a vast canyon of sandstone and three different colored layers of sedimentary rock. They kept to the left side of the river until a great rock too big to move, and with too many consequences tied to it if it was moved with magic, forced everyone to cross the river and take the path on the other side.

Aurelien and Clarion assessed how much rope and grappling hooks they had between the two of them. While Solange was watching the sun and spray from the river’s flow create faint fragments of rainbows in the air. She changed into her Unicorn form, making sure the Alicorn Sword in its diadem form appeared with her change. She gently poked Clarion’s shoulder with her horn.

Clarion turned to her. “What is it?” he asked aloud.

“Watch,” she said, and Clarion heard the smile in her voice.

She walked to the river’s edge and closed her eyes. The Bloodstone began to glow first green, then red, and suddenly, the stone shimmered with every color of the rainbow. Solange knelt down and dipped her horn into the river, and the rainbow light flowed from her horn into the flowing waters. Instantly, the water began to slow and solidify until a section of the river became ice solid but was multicolored.

“A temporary rainbow bridge,” said Clarion.

“Clever,” said Aurelien.

“Beautiful,” said Clarion.

She bounded forward and called urgently, “Come on! I can’t hold it long!”

Solange traversed her new creation first, followed by Clarion and Ananias. Solange called for everyone to step carefully but cross quickly.

Both men walked alongside their horses. Aurelien was forced to blindfold Magordian and lead his horse across.

Clarion and Ananias saw how much it was taking Solange’s strength and energy to maintain the bridge. Rislucian was nearly a cross to the other side when he stopped.

“Rislucian, what are you doing? Jump!” called Clarion urgently.

Ananias neighed worriedly as he saw Solange’s Unicorn legs shaking.

Rislucian smelled the red part of the bridge, and then he licked the red part three times. Sweeter water…strawberry flavored, he thought, amazed.

“Ris!” Mesagan cried.

Solange’s knees buckled as she collapsed, and the rainbow bridge disappeared under the Light Wolf’s feet, and he was swept away by the current. Rislucian changed back into a man and tried to swim, letting the current take him. Swiftly, the waters turned to rapids. He was almost at the other side when his foot got painfully wedged between two rocks on the river bed, and the force of his foot getting stuck pulled him under. He shifted back into a wolf, and that freed his foot, but he was tiring. His wolf head broke the surface of the water.

He turned back into a man and cried out, “Help!”

“Grab the rope!” called a voice from above. Mesagan, in his Pegasus form, dropped the end of a rope in front of Rislucian. He managed to
